The timing could not be better. In fact, due to the mounting number of hotel to co-op conversions, hotels are in great demand in our ever-expanding city.  and has had great success with its 22 rooms, including six elegant suites. More than 20 hotels are under construction or in the proposal stage below 14th Street.

Another dazzling addition is the Night Hotel from Vikram Chatwal-of Dream and Time fame--at 132 West 445th Street. Because Midtown is not only extremely expensive and the competition so fierce with residential developers, the best option is to find new and exciting sites elsewhere. Downtown, the Far West Side, Brooklyn. and Queens have all become highly desirable for hotel developers.

Hotels that are in the works are smaller than usual, many of them being boutique hotels with specialized services. Richard Born's two hotels, for instance, are scheduled to open in Summer 2006. For these ventures, he partnered with Ira Drukier and Robert DeNiro to create The Downtown Hotel, at 377-383 Greenwich Street, on the corner of North Moore Street, and another, which is slated to open at 335 Bowery.

The 45-room Loft Hotel Tribeca at 130 Duane Street is also scheduled to open this summer. Hilton Garden Inn Hilton Garden Inn is the name of a chain of hotels operated by Hilton Hotels Corporation. Madison Equities will build a 500room hotel, yet to be named, at West 55th Street, at Eighth Avenue, scheduled to open in mid-2009. It will be an important addition to the Midtown area, which has not seen a new hotel erected in over five years. This tower of hospitality, which replaces a parking lot and office building, is a short hop-skip-and-jump away from the new Hearst Tower There are two buildings named Hearst Tower:
  • Hearst Tower (New York City)
  • Hearst Tower (Charlotte, North Carolina)
. It will also feature a ballroom and restaurant, as well as executive meeting areas and retail space.

A hotel adjacent to the Javits Convention Center is also being mulled over by many developers.

A new and exciting plan by Harry Macklowe could bring a hotel-condo development to Midtown in a spot where five brick buildings currently stand, at the corner of Madison Avenue Madison Avenue, celebrated street of Manhattan, borough of New York City. It runs from Madison Square (23d St.) to the Madison Bridge over the Harlem River (138th St.). In the 1940s and 50s, some of the major U.S.  and 53rd Street. A mega tower will rise with a super first class hotel in the lower third of the building, while luxury condos will grace its upper floors. This will be a brilliant destination for ultra-chic visitors who flock to the Golden Mile to shop.

In other hotel news, the St. Regis Hotel, 55th Street and Fifth Avenue, will unveil three new "designer suites" as it finishes its renovation this fall. Bottega Veneta, Italian luxury leader, will create a two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite on the seventh floor--facing Fifth Avenue--that will feature furniture, fragrance, fixtures, chandeliers and a fireplace from its home line. Other designers are being chosen to replace the Christian Dior and Tiffany rooms that were created in 1991. The possibilities are endless.

Also following this trend is the Mandarin Oriental New York at Columbus, which will boast a "spa suite" designed by Vivienne Tam.

Our city's many visitors will delight in all of the beautiful new quarters designed to accommodate their many needs. Whether we're talking about efficiency rooms or designer suites, it is clear that New York City New York City: see New York, city.
