Roland Corp. Licenses Sound Canvas Sounds and C Format for Apple's QuickTime 3.0.
Enhancing the Quality of Multimedia Audio Worldwide Through
Roland's Enhanced MIDI Sounds and Expanded Controls
In an agreement which will serve to enhance the quality and compatibility of multimedia audio development, Roland Corp. has licensed its Sound Canvas sound set and the (C) Format to Apple Computer Inc. for inclusion in QuickTime 3.0, the newest version of Apple's popular multi-platform multimedia architecture to be released in the first part of 1998.
The licensing agreement between Roland and Apple provides for Roland's Sound Canvas sounds and (C) Format extensions to General MIDI to be integrated with a forthcoming QuickTime-based software synthesizer, yielding professional-quality, MIDI-based audio output to interactive software developers and users worldwide.
Because QuickTime is the foundation upon which the Mac OS and Windows multimedia development is based, the combination of Roland's Sound Canvas sounds and QuickTime's new software synthesis engine will provide CD-quality MIDI sounds and enhanced (C) Format controls to thousands of future multimedia titles.
"Roland Corporation firmly believes that the key to the success of interactive audio using MIDI is the accurate playback of varied music content," said Ikutaro Kakehashi, chairman and chief executive officer of Roland.
"We are proud that Apple has chosen Roland's Sound Canvas sound set and (C) Format for QuickTime. This will provide an improvement in the quality of interactive audio worldwide, as well as enhance the compatibility and expand the use of MIDI."
A multi-platform multimedia architecture, QuickTime is widely used by both the Mac OS and Windows multimedia applications. A smaller Roland General MIDI sound set was originally licensed by Apple in 1994 for QuickTime 2.0. This new agreement, however, marks the first time QuickTime has included the full Sound Canvas sound set and enhanced (C) sound controls.
Roland introduced the world's first General MIDI/(C) Format-compatible sound module in 1991 with its SC-55 Sound Canvas. The Sound Canvas has since been recognized as the reference for General MIDI compatibility by the Interactive Audio Special Interest Group (IASIG) of the MIDI Manufacturer's Association (MMA).
Roland's (C) Format consists of extensions to the General MIDI specification, providing expanded musical control and compatibility.
Roland is a world leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of electronic musical instruments, professional audio equipment, multimedia products and music accessories. Roland Sound Canvas and Desk Top Music Products are sold in the United States by Edirol Corp., 360/332-4211.
