Roland Corp. Licenses Sound Canvas Sounds and C Format for Apple's QuickTime 3.0.LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 1997-- Enhancing the Quality of Multimedia Audio Worldwide Through Roland's Enhanced MIDI Sounds and Expanded Controls In an agreement which will serve to enhance the quality and compatibility of multimedia audio development, Roland Corp. has licensed its Sound Canvas sound set and the (C) Format to Apple Computer Inc. for inclusion in QuickTime 3.0, the newest version of Apple's popular multi-platform multimedia architecture to be released in the first part of 1998. The licensing agreement between Roland and Apple provides for Roland's Sound Canvas sounds and (C) Format extensions to General MIDI A standard set of 128 sounds for MIDI sound cards and devices (synthesizers, sound modules, etc.). By assigning instruments to specific MIDI patch locations, General MIDI provides a standard way of communicating MIDI sound. to be integrated with a forthcoming QuickTime-based software synthesizer A software synthesizer, also known as a softsynth or virtual instrument is a computer program for digital audio generation. Computer software which can create sounds or music is not new, but advances in processing speed are allowing softsynths to accomplish the same , yielding professional-quality, MIDI-based audio output to interactive software developers and users worldwide. Because QuickTime is the foundation upon which the Mac OS and Windows multimedia development is based, the combination of Roland's Sound Canvas sounds and QuickTime's new software synthesis engine will provide CD-quality MIDI sounds and enhanced (C) Format controls to thousands of future multimedia titles.
