Rockwell International Rockwell International was the ultimate incarnation of a series of companies under the sphere of influence of Willard Rockwell, who had made his fortune after the invention and successful launch of a new bearing system for truck axles in 1919.  Corp.'s Iowa division was awarded a $39.8-million contract to build a massive communications system In telecommunication, a communications system is a collection of individual communications networks, transmission systems, relay stations, tributary stations, and data terminal equipment (DTE) usually capable of interconnection and interoperation to form an integrated whole.  for the U.S. Air Force last week.

The contract was awarded to El Segundo-based Rockwell through the Air Force's Warner Robbins Air Logistics Center in Georgia on July 5.

The Rockwell system will allow the Air Force to make high-frequency communication links without monitoring frequencies or making repeated voice calls. It will be used by some of the Air Force's most important sections, including the Military Airlift Command Military Airlift Command (MAC) was a former United States Air Force command.

In addition to the primary transport aircraft units, MAC also served as the headquarters for several independent "services.
 as well as the Strategic Air Command and the National Command Authority, both of which coordinate U.S. military responses in event of nuclear war.

The Air Force's purchase of the system is considered significant because it is the first major contract awarded after the Defense Department established higher standards for communication links.

Rockwell is a $12 billion (1989 revenues) aerospace contractor that has emphasized commercial activities during the last several years as the defense budget has shrunk shrunk
