Rockwell Automotive announces plans to develop air suspension systems for the heavy vehicle industry.

TROY, Mich.--(AutomotiveWire)--June 13, 1996--Rockwell Automotive has announced its entry into the air suspension Air suspension is a type of vehicle suspension powered by an engine driven or electric air pump or compressor. This pump pressurizes the air, using compressed air as a spring. Air suspension replaces conventional steel springs.  market for the heavy vehicle industry as the result of a newly-formed alliance with Suspensions, Inc., a Canal Fulton, Ohio-based manufacturer of air suspensions for trucks and trailers. The new alliance is effective immediately.

Named Rockwell Heavy Vehicle Suspension Systems, Inc. (RHVSS), the company will be based in Canal Fulton, with offices also at Rockwell Automotive's Troy headquarters. Ervin VanDenberg, previous president of Suspensions Inc., will serve as RHVSS president and a member of the board of directors, along with Prakash Mulchandani, president, Rockwell Worldwide Truck and Trailer Systems, and Roger Storey, recently-named general manager, Rockwell Worldwide Trailer Products.

The first new trailer air suspension product from RHVSS is expected to be on the market within a year. "We are excited about the opportunity to work with Rockwell in developing new air suspension products and technologies," VanDenberg said. "This alliance combines Suspensions, Inc.'s extensive experience in air suspensions with Rockwell's trailer axle leadership and commitment to offering heavy truck fleets the industry's most complete, high performance drivetrain and undercarriage systems."

Storey, the industry reputation of Suspensions, Inc. and its people was key to this business arrangement. "Suspensions, Inc. has been producing leading-edge suspensions for both the heavy- and light-duty commercial vehicle markets, and both Erv and his design staff are widely recognized as leaders and innovators in developing new suspension technologies," Storey said, noting that VanDenberg has personally developed and patented numerous suspension designs on the world market today, including some of the largest selling designs in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. .

Rockwell's first North American suspension will join a growing list of recent product introductions from Rockwell. "Today's news development on our North American suspension system alliance keeps us in perfect step with our public promise to our customers that we will continue to develop new products featuring the most advanced technologies. Over ten new Rockwell products have been brought to the North American marketplace in a very short time, and our pledge continues whole-heartedly," stressed Mulchandani.
