Rock steady independent living: Masonic Village at Sewickley, Pa.

The Masonic Villages strive to provide 'for wellness of body, mind, and spirit through a continuum of care" at their four sites. The Masonic Village at Sewickley, the winner of the independent living category of CLTC's annual Order of Excellence in Design & Architecture award, captured that mission with striking beauty.

Located 14 miles from Pittsburgh, Masonic Village at Sewickley provides long term care in its nursing home, assisted living as·sist·ed living

One of the biggest hurdles faced by Masonic Village at Sewickley, Pa., when it was first proposed was trying to market it without actually having the village, only a dream. B.J. Franks, executive director of the facility, said the developers knew what they want ed to offer at the village to make a place that seniors would want to live. "But we had no structures to show them, "she said.

The Masons had a vision of a retirement community that would emphasize seniors' desire to live independently while still offering services and housing for those that could no longer do so.

"And people trusted us" and bought into the dream, Franks said. Even a number of the original trustees for the Valley Care Nursing Home have moved into the Masonic Village at Sewickley.
