Robots replace security guards. (Tech Talk).

The Defense Department now is employing robots as security guards. A case in point is the Mobile Detection Assessment Response System.

Developed by General Dynamics General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE: GD) is a defense conglomerate formed by mergers and divestitures, and as of 2006 it is the sixth largest defense contractor in the world[1]. The company has changed markedly in the post-Cold War era of defense consolidation.  Robotic Systems robotic system An integrated system of devices that automate production and manufacturing of goods and services Surgery An AI-based surgical assistant system, which processes sensory input from haptic interfaces and/or allows surgeons to act with more accuracy than , of Westminister, Md., MDARS MDARS Mobile Detection Assessment Response System

has obstacle avoidance In robotics, obstacle avoidance is the task of satisfying some control objective subject to non-intersection or non-collision position constraints. Normally obstacle avoidance is considered to be distinct from path planning in that one is usually implemented as a reactive control  360-degree sensors capable of detecting intruders at 150 meters.

It also can detect breached security locks.

MDARS weighs more than 2,900 pounds, has a 42-hp diesel engine and can travel up at 20 miles per hour. It runs for 12 hours without refueling.

One operator can manage as many as 10 MDARS vehicles from a three-screen control station that shows where each vehicle is on a map of the area. The operator can hear what the vehicle "hears" through a microphone and can map out a mission for the vehicle to perform autonomously. Operators also can drive the vehicle remotely, using a joystick (hardware, games) joystick - A device consisting of a hand held stick that pivots about one end and transmits its angle in two dimensions to a computer. Joysticks are often used to control games, and usually have one or more push-buttons whose state can also be read by the computer. .

The control system has an Ethernet connection over a fiber-optic or radio frequency communications link.
