Robeson and Russia.Warren Mass's article ("A Mockery of Black Heritage," February 23 issue) was of special interest to me for it brought back memories of long ago. In 1948, while teaching in London, England, I was encouraged to go hear Paul Robeson, who was performing in Albert Hall. I had never heard of him but when I was told that he was a great concert singer of classical music, of course, I wanted to attend. I was absolutely delighted when he began singing, for he had one of the most lovely voices I had ever heard. As he began to sing I settled back in my seat, closed my eyes and began daydreaming. I was literally in "seventh heaven." When he finished he startled me back into reality by lambasting the United States! However. as he began to sing again, I temporarily forgave him and began dreaming again only to be startled once more when he finished. After the second song he praised Russia! He vacillated back and forth that way until I became so disgusted that I left by the time he was half way through the concert. I refused to listen any longer. I had no idea at the time that he was a Communist. Some time after returning home I learned that he was one, and I can certainly verify the fact that, he "sang" the praises of Russia!
