Fifteen-year-old Cassie believes everyone has one talent. Some people are gifted at whistling. Some can find parking places. Others have a knack for choosing the wrong line. Her gift is to come in second place, especially when it comes to romance. Perhaps the fault lies with her red hair and B-list looks. Yet, she finds herself engaged in all-out war with the most popular (and phoniest) girl in school for the attentions of the new boy, Kevin Matthews Kevin Matthews is a Midwest-based radio personality, best known for his 12-year association with the Loop and its onetime sister-station, AM1000. Matthews became popular for his off-kilter take on various topics. . Desperate times call for desperate measures, and by being proactive, Cassie gets her seat changed to be next to Kevin in English, where the two are assigned to write a one-act play together. Meanwhile, Sterling Carter, or "Fourteen Carat" or "F.K.," as Cassie calls her, is also making her moves. Winner of the sweepstakes will be determined by who Kevin asks to the Winter Ball.
