Robert Welch, RIP.

In 1962, the editors of NATIONAL REVIEW felt it necessary to disavow TO DISAVOW. To deny the authority by which an agent pretends to have acted as when he has exceeded the bounds of his authority.

Robert Welch Robert Welch may refer to:
  • Robert Stanley Welch, (1928-2000), a politician in Ontario, Canada.
  • Robert W. Welch Jr., founder of the John Birch Society.
  • Robert Welch (silversmith), the British silversmith.
and the John Birch Society John Birch Society, ultraconservative, anti-Communist organization in the United States. It was founded in Dec., 1958, by manufacturer Robert Welch and named after John Birch, an American intelligence officer killed by Communists in China (Aug., 1945). . The way we put it, on that occasion, was that Welch suffered from the delusion that the "subjective intentions of an individual can be inferred from the objectives effects of the policies he pursues." It is hard to imagine that it will ever happen that history will forgive Robert Welch his strange interpretation of the causes of the Western decline. But by no means inconceivable that, one day, he will escape the muddled coils of his own thought and emerge as a man thoroughly devoted to the continuing freedom of the Republic he sought to serve.
