Robert Smithson's sketch of his Island Project (1970). Smithson, the land artist most famous for his Spiral Jetty The Spiral Jetty, considered to be the central work of American sculptor Robert Smithson, is an earthwork sculpture constructed in 1970.

Built of mud, salt crystals, basalt rocks, earth, and water on the northeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake near Rozel Point in
 in the Great Salt Lake, died at only 35 in a plane crash. His work is comprehensively displayed in Robert Smithson Robert Smithson (January 2, 1938–July 20, 1973) was an American artist famous for his land art.

Smithson was born in Passaic, New Jersey and studied painting and drawing in New York City at the Art Students League.
