Roadway to close for safety upgrade.

Byline: Jack Moran The Register-Guard

SPRINGFIELD - Driving along South 42nd Street in recent months hasn't been much fun, with underground sewer SEWER. City officials believe that by the end of this summer, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians alike should be pleased with the changes they'll encounter on the thoroughfare THOROUGHFARE. A street or way so open that one can go through and get out of it without returning. It differs from a cul de sac, (q.v.) which is open only at one end.

Beginning today, sections of South 42nd Street will be closed to through traffic to accommodate work crews planning to complete a major road reconstruction job there by Aug. 30.

Motorists who customarily travel the route should instead take South 32nd Street to reach their destination, city project manager Jeff Paschall said.

Besides rebuilding of the street's surface, sidewalks and bicycle lanes will be added to make the area safer.

"Once this is done, I think people will be happy with it," Paschall said. "We just have to inconvenience them for the short term."

The upgrade has been a city goal since 2002, when a 7-year-old boy was killed when he rode his bike into a moving 20-foot trailer at South 42nd Street and Jasper Road.

The city in 2005 installed a roundabout at the intersection and built sidewalks and bike lanes bike lane ncarril m de bicicleta; carril m bici

The work beginning today is considered the project's second phase.

Overall, the project will cost about $3.5 million, Paschall said. The Oregon Department of Transportation has provided funding for the upgrade.
