Roadway and Reimer Among First to Receive Carrier Certification for Customs Self Assessment.

Roadway Express, Inc. and its Canadian subsidiary, Reimer Express Lines Ltd., received approval from Canada Customs and Revenue Agency to participate in the Customs Self Assessment (CSA) initiative implemented on December 3, 2001. Roadway is one of the first carriers certified for CSA by Canada Customs.

At a time when cross-border security is more important than ever, being one of seven elite carriers that were selected out of 140 applications to receive CSA approval is a significant accomplishment."

Customs Self Assessment is part of the Customs Blueprint introduced by Canada Customs to streamline processes for low-risk shipments moving into Canada. Initially, only U.S. originated goods will be eligible for the CSA program. Another important requirement is that the Canadian importer, the transportation company and the driver must be CSA-certified. All of Roadway's international drivers have applied for their CDRP cards (Commercial Driver Registration Program) issued to CSA-approved drivers, and they have begun to receive them in the mail during the past few weeks.

"There are big benefits to this program. CSA importers will be relieved of the transactional entries requirement - they will be able to monitor and make adjustments in their own systems, and report to customs periodically," explains Diana Bennett, Director of International Business Development for Roadway. "The process of paying customs obligations will be simplified, which could mean improved cash flow for participating importers. Customs will be better able to quickly distinguish between high-risk and low-risk shipments; therefore, customs resources can be focused on those that are higher risk."
