Roadway Corporation (Nasdaq:ROAD)
-- Michael W. Wickham to retire as CEO; will remain as Chairman of the Board

-- James D. Staley to serve as President and CEO of Roadway Corporation

-- Robert L. Stull to be named President of Roadway Express


Roadway Corporation (Nasdaq:ROAD) announced today that Michael W. Wickham, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, will step down as Chief Executive Officer and continue in the position of Chairman of the Board effective with his retirement on March 26, 2003.

At the same time, Roadway veteran James D. Staley, 53, will serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of the transportation holding company. Robert L. Stull, 47, will succeed Staley as President of Roadway Express Roadway is an operating company within YRC National Transportation, a division of YRC Worldwide which is headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas. The company services all (50) states as Roadway, services Canada with its subsidiary, Reimer Express. , the company's largest operating subsidiary An operating subsidiary is a business term frequently used within the United States railroad industry. In the case of a railroad, it refers to a company that is a subsidiary but operates with its own identity and rolling stock. . Robert W. Obee, 48, will assume the new venture responsibilities formerly handled by Stull.

Staley is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of Roadway Express. Stull now serves as Vice President - New Venture Commerce and Obee is Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Roadway Express.

Effective immediately, John D. Bronneck, 55, has been promoted to the position of Executive Vice President - Operations for Roadway Express where he currently serves as Vice President - Operations.

Wickham stated, "I have had the privilege of working for our great Company for 35 years. It is time for me to turn the day-to-day operation of the Company over to Jim Staley. He has been a key player in our Company for 31 years and is fully prepared to take the Company to the next level. We have just completed contract negotiations that will allow Roadway Express to remain competitive and provide job security for our employees. These negotiations were completed well in advance of the contract termination Defense procurement: the cessation or cancellation, in whole or in part, of work under a prime contract or a subcontract thereunder for the convenience of, or at the option of, the government, or due to failure of the contractor to perform in accordance with the terms of the contract (default).  date of March 31. Wickham, 56, became Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Roadway Corporation effective May 30, 2001, when the holding company was formed. Before that he served in the same capacity at Roadway Express beginning in March 1998. Wickham held the position of President of Roadway Express from July 1990 until the Company's spin-off in 1996, when he became the Company's President and Chief Executive Officer.

Wickham spent his entire career with Roadway, joining the Company in South Kearny, New Jersey Kearny (pronounced /kɑrni/) is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. It was named after Civil War general Philip Kearny. Early in his career, Wickham served as Terminal Manager in Hartford, Connecticut; Boston, Massachusetts; and Kearny, New Jersey. He then became District Manager in the Northeast Division and was later promoted to Division Vice President for that Division. Wickham next served as Division Vice President in the Company's Western Division. He was then promoted to Vice President, and subsequently Executive Vice President, Finance & Administration at the corporate headquarters in Akron, Ohio.

Prior to becoming a Vice President, Stull spent two years as District Manager in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and three-and-a-half years as District Manager in Portland, Oregon. He began his career with Roadway in 1977 as a Dispatcher Software that determines what pending tasks should be done next and assigns the available resources to accomplish it.
