Road to Eugene meet returns May 27.

Hayward Field at University of Oregon is one of the most well-known historic track and field stadiums in the United States. It has been the home to the University of Oregon Track and Field teams since 1919.

On Tuesday, UO director of track and field Vin Lananna said this year's Road to Eugene '08 meet will be held May 27 at Hayward Field, one day after the conclusion of the NCAA NCAA

The tentative meet schedule includes 15 events. Similar to last year, it will benefit the Professional Athletics Association, a newly formed union of professional track and field athletes.

The meet is part of a commitment made by Eugene's Local Organizing Committee during the bid process to host the 2008 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials to provide more competitive opportunities for U.S. athletes.

Lananna plans to add one more wrinkle to the weekend.

He said a men's and women's 5,000-meter race will be held Saturday night at least one hour after the finish of the NCAA West Regionals.

U.S. 5,000 champion moves to Eugene

Lauren Fleshman, the reigning U.S. champion in the 5,000 meters, has moved to Eugene and will be one of the headline performers at this week's Oregon Invitational at Hayward Field.

The Stanford graduate, who is a three-time NCAA champion and collegiate record-holder in the 5K, will run either the 1,500 or 5,000 during the distance carnival portion of the two-day meet on Friday night.

The two-time World Championships qualifier and 15-time all-American is engaged to Jesse Thomas, a former standout at Mountain View High School in Bend, who won the 2001 Pac-10 steeplechase steeplechase

The Oregon Invitational's Friday night schedule begins at 5:20 p.m. with section two of the women's 5,000 and concludes at 9 p.m. with the women's 10,000.

The marquee event is the Bill McChesney Memorial men's 5,000 at 8:05 p.m.

Tentative race entrants include Oregon's Galen Rupp, Wisconsin's Chris Solinsky, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland.  Olympian Michael Aish, U.S. Olympians Jonathon Riley and Dan Browne and Oregon Track Club Elite's Sean Graham.

On Saturday, the meet begins at 2 p.m. with the men's pole vault and ends at 5:12 p.m. with the men's 4x400 relay.
