David Brons was driving by at the time. Witnessing the accident, he stopped, dived into the river, and upon reaching the truck sought unsuccessfully to break out the cab's rear window. He surfaced and yelled at bystanders on the bank to toss him a rock, which he then used to break the window.

Moving to the driver's side door, he was able to open it and, using a knife supplied by one of the bystanders, cut the safety belt and remove Estes.

On April 24th of this year, the Carnegie Hero Fund The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, also known as Carnegie Hero Fund, was established to recognize persons who perform extraordinary acts of heroism in civilian life in the United States and Canada, and to provide financial assistance for those disabled and the dependents of  Commission announced that Brons would receive a Camegie Medal and a $3,500 grant, given to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others.
