Risky jobs.

According to an Ontario government report released in 1990, gasoline station attendants and taxi drivers in Ontario are killed on the job at almost the same rate as police officers.

The average annual homicide rate was only 0.17 deaths per 100,000 workers, but researchers found that employees in certain job categories are at much greater risk.

There were 84 work-related homicides for all occupations in Ontario from 1975 to 1985. Seven were gasoline station attendants. That works out to 5.9 per 100, 000 male workers, compared with the rate of 6.1 for male Ontario police officers, 13 of whom were killed during the period.

The over-all workplace homicide rate in Ontario is much lower than in all United States. The rate for male workers in California and Texas, for examples, was eight times higher than in Ontario.
