The Wichita Eagle reported that upon returning to his house on the morning of June 5, Pastor Steven Moler learned from his wife, who was hysterical, and from one of about a dozen guests who had arrived at the home to eat brunch, that a man was rummaging through the house and stealing rifles, even as the group watched.

. Moler's 27-year-old son and a former sheriff then joined Moler, and so the thief tried to run. But he didn't get far before Moler's son tackled him. The three men then held him for the police.

Later it was learned that the man had been in the Molers' house for over two hours, and the man had used their hot tub, watched the movie Karate Kid II, and had tried on some of their clothes. When he was captured, he was wearing Pastor Moler's sweatpants.
