at best. Choreographer and artistic director Jonathan Riedel is out of Limon--often far out of Limon.

His dances were of two kinds. The better ones were the real movement pieces, such as the opener, Of Apes and Angels to Antonio Vivaldi, or the closer, Cracked Earth v4.2, to Arvo Part and Henryk Gorecki. These are decently crafted, full of lush movement and sophisticated deploying of groups, much like his Limon Company heritage. The problem is that there's nothing really original in Reidel's pieces.

Of the dancers, the most engaging here, and on the program as a whole, was Francisco Ruvalcaba, a Tommy Lee Jones For the musician, see .

The theater dance pieces were the worst I've seen in years--pretentious, immature, muddy, indulgent, just plain bad art--the kind of thing that makes you lean over to the friend who's come with you and whisper "Sorry" in the middle of a dance and she knows immediately what you're talking about.

, a drawing room piece in which Riedel in waistcoat, called "Him" in the program, stalks broodily about the stage space, while Mary Ford, as "Her" in long dress, comes and goes, trying to depict a picture of unexplained anxiety and anguish. There's a piano to the side and a text that is disconnected from the movement and the program notes. On the whole, the work seemed a wannabe Lilac Garden without the lilacs, the garden, or the complication of other personalities.

It is migratory, wintering in eastern Africa, from Eritrea and Somalia south to Tanzania. , inspired, the program says, by the work of Edward Gorey, that darkly mischevous and brutally perceptive illustrator. Riedel needs the Gorey intelligence, and his instinct for editing and for personality.

In a section called "Ursula Finds a Friend," Riedel portrays a campy "dark, feline figure" stalking Roxane D'Orleans Juste's character called a "young girl." Now wolves aren't feline, and Riedel bites the neck of his victim--mixed metaphors, and devoid of the wit of Mark Morris's vampire masterpiece, One Charming Night.

The logo on the company's T-shirts reads, unfortunately, "A snack for the soul." Indeed: a real mini-snack.
