Business Editors/Health & Medical Writers

PASADENA, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Aug. 15, 2002

Richard Cordova has been appointed president of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Region, serving 3.1 million members through 11 medical centers and more than 100 medical and administrative offices from San Diego to Bakersfield. Cordova, now one of the highest-ranking Latinos in the private sector of California health care, brings a strong background in public health issues to his new leadership role at Kaiser Permanente. His close ties to the community include 19 years with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) in Los Angeles County's department providing public and personal health services to the over 10 million residents in the County. .

"This is my home -- my roots are here," said Cordova, the son of an East Los Angeles East Los Angeles, uninc. city (1990 pop. 126,379), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles, in an industrial area. It has a large Mexican-American population. There is a performing arts center and a cultural center. A junior college is there.  auto mechanic. "This is an opportunity to give something back to my community during a time of critical need. We're facing a health care funding crisis. I am already working closely with local leaders as we strive to make certain health care is available in Southern California. Kaiser Permanente can't solve this problem alone, but there is much we can and will do to help."

Cordova also pledges to continue his efforts to increase opportunities for minorities. He serves on the national Board of INROADS, a minority business development program. "I'm proud to be part of an organization that values diversity," said Cordova. "I want everyone in our community to have a chance to succeed."

Cordova is a visionary health care leader. In 1989, for example, he encouraged the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is the five member governing board of Los Angeles County, California.  would threaten the quality of and access to care for already vulnerable members of our community."

Cordova predicts great things for Kaiser Permanente in Southern California: "Kaiser Permanente is growing here because we are all about delivering the best health care possible. I think people who join Kaiser Permanente understand that and know we are unique. Our average length of membership with Kaiser Permanente is 16 years and that speaks volumes about the relationship that we have with those members."

George C. Halvorson, chairman and CEO of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., appointed Cordova to his new leadership position. Cordova will join the new Regional Presidents Group, representing the eight regions of the national Kaiser Permanente health care program. "Rich brings a wealth of health care industry experience to his new role, and unique, in-depth operational knowledge of Kaiser Permanente," said Halvorson.

Most recently, Cordova had been chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)
