Ribapharm Inc. Tops Orange County Companies on Deloitte & Touche's Orange County/San Diego Fast 50 Ranking of Fastest Growing Tech Companies.

Leads biotech category with 8,732% revenue growth

Ribapharm Inc., a biotechnology company based in Costa Mesa, was the top ranked Orange County company in Deloitte & Touche's "2001 Orange County/San Diego Technology Fast 50," an annual program which recognizes the region's 50 fastest growing technology companies according to according to

 five-year revenue growth percentage. The Fast 50 ranking was revealed at an awards dinner on September 10 at the Marriott Laguna Cliffs Resort, Dana Point.

Ribapharm, which researches and develops anti-viral and cancer drugs, had a five-year revenue growth rate of 8,732%. The firm topped the list's 10 biotech companies, eight of which were based in the San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  area, and two in Orange County. The other Orange County-based biotech firm, Sicor Inc., was ranked number forty-six, with a five-year revenue growth rate of 404%.

"It's interesting to note that our top biotech company is based in Orange County, not in San Diego," said Fred Poska, partner, Orange County Technology & Communications Group, Deloitte & Touche. "Biotechnology continues to grow and serve as a vital category in the technology sector. In fact, the number of biotech companies on our list this year has doubled from last year."

Other Orange County-based companies that ranked in the top ten for 2001 are number six-ranked Aspeon Inc., a computer/peripherals company based in Irvine, with a five-year revenue growth rate of 5436%: and number seven-ranked Broadcom, a communications company Communications Company is a communications unit of the United States Marine Corps. They are part of Combat Logistics Regiment 37 , 3rd Marine Logistics Group (3MLG) and III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF). The unit is based out of the Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D.  also based in Irvine. This is the fourth consecutive year that Broadcom has appeared on the Fast 50 ranking. In 2000, it was ranked number four; in 1999, it ranked number two; and in 1998, it ranked number four.

Six other Orange County-based companies have won four or more consecutive years, including Quest Software The computer-software manufacturer Quest Software (Quest Software, Inc.) (NASDAQ: QSFT), headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California, dates from 1987. Fast 50 companies must have 1996 operating revenues operating revenue

Revenue from any regular source. Revenue from sales is adjusted for discounts and returns when calculating operating revenue. Compare other revenue.
 of at least $50,000 and 2000 operating revenues of at least $1,000,000; must be a U.S. company developing and/or providing technology products or services; and must have been in business for at least five years. The finalists are eligible to compete in the "Technology Fast 500," also sponsored by Deloitte & Touche, and ranking the nation's top 500 fastest growing technology companies.
