Rhonda confirms massive lead-zinc-silver deposit in NWT.CALGARY Calgary (kăl`gərē), city (1991 pop. 710,677), S Alta., Canada, at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. "When we began the drilling program this year, we were anticipating that results would show that we were sitting on a high-tonnage, economic-grade deposit," said Glen Alston, Rhonda's Corporate Secretary. "So far, we haven't been disappointed." During 1996, Rhonda completed 31 exploration core holes in eight targets at Epworth. Nine holes drilled on seven copper targets intersected significant mineralization Mineralization The process by which the body uses minerals to build bone structure. Mentioned in: Rickets mineralization, n the bioprecipitation of an inorganic substance. . More significant, however, were the results from 21 holes drilled to test widespread lead-zinc mineralization at Esker esker, long, narrow, winding ridge of stratified sand-and-gravel drift. Eskers, many miles long and resembling abandoned railway embankments, occur in Scandinavia, Ireland, Scotland, and New England; they arose from deposition of sediment in the beds of streams . All 21 holes intersected lead- zinc-silver mineralization averaging 10 feet in thickness. "This constitutes by far the most significant base-metal discovery on the Rhonda-Noranda Epworth lands," said Alston. At drill hole E-4-96, for example, assay results indicate an impressive 10.8% lead, 0.04% zinc zinc, metallic chemical element; symbol Zn; at. no. 30; at. wt. 65.38; m.p. 419.58°C;; b.p. 907°C;; sp. gr. 7.133 at 25°C;; valence +2. Zinc is a lustrous bluish-white metal. It is found in Group 12 of the periodic table. , and 0.613 oz of silver per ton. Four other holes show lead grades of between 1.36% and 3.68%, zinc grades of between 0.23% and 6.98%. Company geologists A geologist is a contributor to the science of geology. "It's important to note that much of the mineralization which is widespread over the property, is of economic grades," Alston emphasized. "Also, the ore at the Esker Claims is non-pyritic and contains minimal contaminants--a significant environmental plus." Since January 1996, Rhonda has been the operator of the Esker project, which is owned 50-50 with Quebec-based mining titan Noranda Exploration. In 1992, Rhonda and Noranda began jointly exploring the Epworth property, located in the Nunavut settlement area in the Northwest Territories. Rhonda jointly owns 600,000 acres of the Epworth property with Noranda, and has 100% ownership of another 420,000 acres. This Fall, Rhonda plans to complete drill hole logging, core sampling, assaying, and research. Final results from all the drill holes are expected to be in by December. As well, the company will be initiating consultation and coordination of the Esker project with Nunavut Territorial Government. In April 1997, Rhonda plans to commence mini-bulk sampling and further drilling to outline the ore deposits. Mapping, prospecting and exploration drilling will also continue.
