Rhodia do Brasil--a Brazilian subsidiary of the French Rhone
Poulenc Group--recently released first quarter results. Quarterly
operating profits grew 45% (from $46 to $68 million) compared to the
same period in 1998. Net sales increased from R$530 million to R$660
million. The company attributes its positive results to the strong
performance of its Rhodia-Ster polyester fiber business. In related
news, plans are under way at Rhodia S.A. to sell its chemicals
operations, which represent approximately 9% of worldwide sales for
Rhodia S.A.
