Reynolds recycling record includes 100-billionth can

Reynolds Metals Co. recently reported that it recycled 450 million pounds of consumer-generated aluminum in 1989, and paid recyclers more than $180 million for their efforts. The consumer recycling pioneer said the record results included the 100-billionth aluminum can recycled by Reynolds since it began buying aluminum in 1968.

The consumer-generated pounds comprised more than half the 865-million lbs. of claimed aluminum processed by Reynolds in 1988.

"Our aluminum recovery from all sources last year accounted for nearly one-third of Reynolds metal production," said Richard Bolling, vice president, Reynolds Recycling and Reclamation division. "As the public's awareness of solid waste disposal and other environmental problems increases, this source of supply will continue to grow."

Vice president and general manager, Reynolds Aluminum Recycling Co., Charles Rayco, noted that the company's record consumer recycling results included 100 million pounds of non-can scrap.

"As more aluminum is utilized in automobiles, appliances, building supplies, packaging items and other household goods, these metal sources will increase within our recycling stream and lessen the burden on the solid waste stream," Rayfield said.
