Reviving Holm.The University of New Mexico's Department of Theatre and Dance in Albuquerque gave new life to Hanya Holm's rarely performed Rota (1975) last spring. It was created by the U.S. grant made the project possible. Holm created Rota when she was 82, but the poetic intensity and physical focus revealed Holm's genius as flesh. The choreography moves through space like soft clay, weaving elegant scallops and circles. Divided into four parts, the dance traces the arc of life. Student Sarah Hinson says, "I learned a new way of moving: developing a resistance within the body, putting just the right amount of energy into it." |
