Review: This is as good as it gets, la; Cigs,Drugs and Rock `n'Roll Unity Theatre.Byline: MIKE CHAPPLE YOU'VE never seen the like of Keith Carter's Nige. Well, you have -everyone in this city knows a Nige. It's just that no-one until now has been able to graft all the little Nigeisms -droopy slouch slouch v. slouched, slouch·ing, slouch·es v.intr. 1. To sit, stand, or walk with an awkward, drooping, excessively relaxed posture. 2. To droop or hang carelessly, as a hat. v. , slack-jawed gob, pot head pixie dead-eyed stare, and surreal Scouse scouse n. 1. A lobscouse. 2. a. often Scous·er A native or resident of Liverpool, England. b. often Scouse The dialect of English spoken in Liverpool. monologues -onto one Puma trackie-topped body in quite the way that the astute Carter has achieved with Liverpool's very own love able version of the Frankenstein monster. Last night was part of the final experiment within the confines of the city's own burgeoning comedy festival before lurching off for a gruelling three-week long test at the big one in Edinburgh. Will he be hounded out of that city by its torch-bearing burghers? On this form, Culture vulture vulture, common name for large birds of prey of temperate and tropical regions. The show's format is simple. Nige is waiting in his Toxteth beds it -littered with old ECHOs,pizza boxes and talking furniture (!?) -waiting for his band Strange Lumps to turn up. A meld of Carter's current sketches into a seamless whole, this is a one-man narrative that provides possibly the most riveting -and certainly the funniest -60 minutes'entertainment you'll see. With Nige, Carter has rammed the essence of Scouseness in a bottle,sealed and shaken it, then popped the top. What comes out is a shower of profoundly brilliant comic imagination populated by bizarre characters and outrageous un-PC wit. Highlights are numerous, including Nige's acid flashback interlude borrowed from the psychedelic scenes of 2001 A Space Odyssey. And then there are the scandalous songs, shocking affairs about his gran with no eyeballs and the one about his ex-girlfriend, the title of which will make you think twice before picking up a bathroom flannel ever again. As you may have guessed,it was not for the sensitive and would have the Lost in Space robot waggling its vacuum cleaner arms and shouting Danger! Danger! for all its worth. But it was peerlessly tremendous comic craftsmanship,nonetheless. Catch this man while you can. RATING:10 |
