Review: Annie happy returns.Byline: Jenny WatsonANNIE ANNIE Application of Neural Networks for Industry in Europe Liverpool Empire THE Birkenhead Operatic Society have taken on Strouse and Charnin's musical Annie for their first outing of 2003. There's always tomorrow for President Roosevelt to introduce his New Deal and create jobs for millions of destitute Americans - as Annie tells him when she gets taken to the White House. New York News was the story of the fictional New York Reporter , was a youngster (StephanieDavis) as the plucky red-head. Animal actor Scrappy, who plays Annie's canine friend Sandy, was a hot favourite with the audience last night, sitting with the patience of an angel while Annie trilled Tomorrow in his ear. Davis (who alternates with Jade Cotgrave in the part) is confident beyond her age and tiny stature, so it comes as no surprise when she charms billionaire Mr Warbucks into wanting to take her under his wing. She shone out against the huge chorus of fairly ordinary adult cast members - some of whom were struggling to be heard last night - with her strong voice, perfect ear for the American accent and a natural instinct for comic timing. Evil alcoholic Miss Hannigan (Pat Davis) and her dastardly brother Rooster rooster its crowing at dawn heralds each new day. [Western Folklore: Leach, 329] See : Dawn rooster symbol of maleness. [Folklore: Binder, 85] See : Virility (Mark Duffy) try their best to foil Annie's new-found happiness, providing very welcome comedy. Davis is suitably attired in seedy lingerie throughout and their performance of Easy Street, which saw plenty of drunken staggering, went down very well. In some scenes director Elsie Kelly could have been a bit more daring - the adult company ends every number with their hands out-stretched above their heads - but she has worked wonders to bring out strong performances from very young actors. These children do very well to launch the musical into orbit as the curtains pull up to reveal the New York Municipal Orphanage for Girls where Annie acts as mother to the other girls and sings them to sleep with Maybe.
