Reusable vacuum bags reduce cost.

A new process has been developed to produce reusable vacuum bags for infusion, wet lay-up, and prepreg molding of composite parts for boats, truck bodies, and aerospace. Vacuum bags produced via the Sworl technology from Prairie Technology Group, Austin, Texas, are claimed to be a cost-effective replacement for disposable bags or Lite RTM used for short runs.

An example of the composite part to be produced is sprayed with a one-part silicone containing no VOCs. Applied to the "B" (nonmold) surface of the part, the moisture-cured silicone coating conforms to tight radii and complex contours. The cured result is a bag that "fits like a glove" and has high tear strength, durability, and heat resistance up to 350 F, says Larry Audette, president of Prairie Technology, a manufacturer of silicones and adhesives. Depending on tool geometry and bag handling, fabricators can use a Sworl silicone bag for more than 100 parts. Labor associated with fitting disposable bags is eliminated, and the possibility of leakage is also significantly reduced, Audette claims. Tel: (512) 846-2444 * www.sworl.net
