If Oregon's depth chart seems to be settling into place at many positions as the third week of spring practices nears its conclusion, there are two spots definitely in doubt: a kickoff returner In American and Canadian football, a kick returner (KR) is the player on special teams who is primarily responsible to catch kickoffs and attempts to return them in the opposite direction.  and a punt returner Punt returner (PR) is a position on special teams in American football. Description
The role of a punt returner is to catch the ball after it is punted and to give his team good field position (or a touchdown if possible) by returning it.

UO coach Mike Bellotti Robert Michael Bellotti (b. December 21, 1950 in Sacramento, California) has been the head coach of the University of Oregon football team since 1995. His accomplishments at Oregon include an 11-1 season and #2 national ranking in 2001. Education

`It hasn't been a huge emphasis so far,' Bellotti said.

`We certainly know Jonathan Stewart can return kickoffs,' Bellotti acknowledged. `That other kickoff return spot is up for grabs.'

Fellow running backs Jeremiah Johnson and Andiel Brown are in that mix of candidates, and Bellotti said Brown is currently the leading candidate to take over punt returns, so well-handled by the graduated Justin Phinisee last season.

Bellotti said the Saturday scrimmage might include up to a half-dozen punts and as many kickoffs, to both work on the coverage and return units. When the Ducks go offense against defense, there will be `about an hour' of plays.

Much of that will be situational in nature, Bellotti said, with the coach determining a yardline for a possession to start so that both units can work on specific aspects of the game.

The length could be curtailed, Bellotti said, `depending on the health' of the Ducks.

Personnel updates

`It's going to be whatever he can do,' Bellotti said, terming Thursday `a shakedown cruise' to see how much a plate in his cleats relieves the pain and stress on the toe.

Also back Thursday were receivers Derrick Jones (groin) and Kyle Weatherspoon (academics) but still being held out for academic reasons was senior starter James Finley.

Bellotti said both Weatherspoon and Finley are `progressing on some outstanding debts' in their academic obligations and described their status for practices as `day to day.'

Though he was lining up with the first defensive unit Thursday, it was likely the final practice of the spring for end Michael Speed. He is scheduled to undergo surgery today on his left thumb, which was injured earlier this month.

Assistant easing back

Bellotti said Pflugrad would ease back into fulltime duties, and might continue to attend only portions of the workouts on the field for the remainder of spring drills, which conclude April 29. Bellotti will continue to work with receivers when the units break up for drills.
