Return to sender. The Internet certainly is a fun place. Where else can you run across such juicy "news" items as the one that appeared Feb. 23 on the politics1.com site? The site's Vin Gopal cited "well-placed sources close to former US Senator Bob Smith" who say "Smith has shifted away from his earlier plan to run for U.S. Senate in Florida, where he has lived for the past few years. Instead, Smith--who has maintained a home in New Hampshire--now plans to return to the Granite State and run for U.S. Senate in the GOP primary next year if former U.S. Senator John Sununu Jr. runs for Judd Gregg's open seat." [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] According to Gopal, "one of Smith's consultants, who asked not to be named, said Smith will emphasize his pro-gun rights, pro-life and pro-environment stances against Sununu. Smith, you may recall, high-tailed it to Florida in 2002 after losing a bitter primary to Sununu. That came after Smith briefly left the Republican Party in 1999 in what turned out to be a misguided, and very temporary, attempt to run for president as an independent. As Gopal wrote, part of Smith s motivation for running against Sununu would be to inflict as much political damage as possible on Sununu." For his part, Smith later told the Concord Monitor that the report was "not true" and "absolutely falser' He added: I have no idea where these things come from]' He did say that he was still considering running for the Senate in Florida. You could be tempted to say, as it was said in 2003, New Hampshire's gain is Florida's loss. But that wouldn't be nice. |
