Retrieving Trinitarian theology. (Books).

The Trinity: An Essential for Faith in Our Time Andrew Stirling ed., (Evangel Publishing House, $29, from Timothy Eaton Memorial Church Coordinates:  Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, in Toronto, Canada, was erected at 230 St. Clair Avenue West in 1914 as a Methodist congregation, and named for department store founder Timothy Eaton. , 416-925-5977)

One of my former teachers once quipped that those who deny the doctrine of the Trinity may lose their souls, while those who try to explain it may lose their minds. This book was written by a number of pastors, church leaders and theologians, mostly Canadians, who argue that the church is in danger of losing its soul because "the loss of the Trinitarian conception of God entails the loss of central affirmations of the Christian faith."

The book is edited by Andrew Stirling, senior minister of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, Toronto, who also wrote the introduction and a fine essay on the challenges to Trinitarian faith in the modem world. Divided into four parts, the book contains essays on the Trinity in the Scriptures, the Trinity in church history (particularly the Early Church and the 19th century), the Trinity questioned (especially the challenges posed by feminism, religious pluralism The examples and perspective in this article or section may not represent a worldwide view of the subject.

The essays are marked by a concern to retrieve the richness of the biblical and catholic tradition of Trinitarian theology Trinitarian theology is a way of doing systematic theology that understands the Trinity to be the foundational doctrine that permeates all areas of theology as opposed to one point of doctrine in systematics.  while, at the same time, restating the importance of this teaching for contemporary Christian churches.

The value of the book is fourfold. First, it contains a masterful foreword by German theologian Wolfhart Pannenberg Wolfhart Pannenberg (born on 2 October 1928 in Stettin (Szczecin, Poland)) is a German Christian theologian. Life and views

, which is worth the price of the book alone. Secondly, it reminds us that the doctrine of the Trinity is in danger of being ignored or set aside in some churches. Thirdly, the essays by Edith Humphrey of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary Coordinates:  Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, founded in 1794, is a graduate theological institution associated with the Presbyterian Church USA.  (until recently a professor at Augustine College, Ottawa), David Curry David Maurice Curry (born June 13, 1944) British politician. , by providing a thorough overview and introduction to the doctrine of the Trinity, this book may lead some to explore the renewal of Trinitarian theology that has been taking place in the past two decades.

In short, a good read, not always easy, occasionally polemical, but certainly worthwhile.
