Retired and new bishops.


Ottawa--On December 4,2000, Archbishop James MacDonald, C.S.C. of St. John's, Nfld, retired from his position on reaching the canonical age of 75. In his place, the Pope appointed Ottawa-born Brendan O'Brien, 57, Bishop of Pembroke since 1993. St. John's claims a Catholic population of 120,000.

On December 12 the Holy Father named Father Martin Currie, 57, to the vacant see of Grand Falls, Nfld. Monsignor Currie was vicar-general of the Archdiocese of Halifax at the time of his appointment. The Grand Falls diocese has been vacant since October 1998 when its bishop, Msgr. Faber MacDonald, was moved to the diocese of St John, N.B. Grand Falls has a Catholic population of 30,700 throughout 30 parishes, served by 27 priests with 28 women religious.

The Ukrainian-rite Eparchy of Saskatoon Saskatoon (săskətn`), city (1991 pop. 186,058), S central Sask., Canada, on the South Saskatchewan River.  has a new bishop with the appointment of Bishop Michael Wiwchar, 68, moved here from the Ukrainian eparchy in Chicago, where he has been bishop since 1993. The Redemptorist bishop was born in Manitoba and served in Saskatoon from 1987 to 1990. The Saskatoon eparchy has stood vacant since 1998. It counts some 20,000 faithful with 32 priests, 5 deacons and 18 men and women religious.
