Retaining youth in forestry: Graduate of environmental studies hopes to continue forestry work in the North. (Forestry).

Bucking the trend of northern youth out-migration, Tracey Latulippe realizes the only place for her to develop personally and professionally is Northern Ontario Northern Ontario is the part of the province of Ontario which lies north of Lake Huron (including Georgian Bay), the French River and Lake Nipissing.

Northern Ontario has a land area of 802,000 km² (310,000 mi²) and constitutes 87% of the land area of Ontario, although it

The Thessalon native is working on several projects including re-production of AFC's Web site and compiling a photo catalogue for the coalition's public awareness campaigns, presentations and trade shows.

She also oversees the region's Envirothon competition, a high school education program seeking to raise awareness of environmental issues.

After graduating in June, receiving her bachelor of environmental studies A Bachelor of Environmental Studies is an undergraduate bachelor's degree awarded for courses taken in the study of environmental studies or related disciplines, such as geography, urban planning, environmental resource studies, or architecture.  degree, she spent last summer working for St. Marys Paper participating in their environmental study of the effects of effluent effluent

The Sault-based coalition is a group of eight area forest products companies committed to forest sustainability and best management practices.

Her love of the outdoors and her appreciation for the environment was instilled at an early age growing up in Thessalon, an hour's drive east of the Sault. Her father, Alan, worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources for many years and several relatives work at Midway Lumber in her hometown.

"My dad and I did a lot of things together in nature and that piqued my interest (in forestry) and I always wanted to go into that field.

"I thought about taking a forestry program, but environmental studies gave me a broader experience," says Latulippe.

The five-year Waterloo program features a well-rounded study of science and ecology along with a co-op placement. She also received a certificate in environmental assessment and law.

She hooked up with the forest coalition for her co-op placement and later guided their August public tours.

Once the one-year placement ends, she hopes her industry connections will land her a job with a forestry company close to home.

"I definitely want to stay in the North," she says. She presently resides in Thessalon and commutes to the Sault.

"It feels like I'm helping the environment here because I'm promoting awareness and education, and it feels good to be able to come back and work and contribute to the community," says Latulippe, who was recently invited to become a board member as a youth representative for the community development centre for East Algoma.

"That's one thing I wouldn't be asked to do if I lived in a big city.

She also does some part-time consulting for the Ontario Forestry Association to expand the Envirothon program to other regions, and is considering that avenue as a possible future self-employment option.
