The company reported $23.3 million in local revenues, beating out No. 2 Heidrick & Struggles International Inc. by just $8,000 in local revenues. [GRAPHIC OMITTED] Chicago-based Heidrick & Struggles saw revenue increase mainly due to its 2006 acquisition of New York-based Highland Partners. Highland Partners had reported revenues of nearly $7 million annually in L.A. County before the acquisition. Another Chicago-based firm, Spencer Smart, reported $15.9 million in local revenue, placing it third on the list. Russell Reynolds and Associates remained in the fourth spot with revenue of $15 million, up $5 million compared with 2006. McCray Sheweloff & Associates Inc., No. 17 last year, was acquired by Morgan Samuels Co. in June. McCray Sheweloff had reported revenues of $1.7 million in 2006. The combined firm remains headquartered in Morgan Samuel's Beverly Hills office. Harold "Mickey" McCray assumed the role of vice chairman for the combined company. [GRAPHIC OMITTED] Retained search firms are under contract to companies to recruit executives as positions become available. Overall, the 25 largest firms in L.A. County reported combined revenue of $128 million, up $7 million from the previous year. The firms on the list employ 157 recruiters in local offices and were responsible for more than 1,100 executive placements in 2007. THE PACESETTER KORN/FERRY International tops the list of retained search firms in Los Angeles County with $23.3 million in local revenue. That's a gain of $2.6 million compared with 2006. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The company conducted searches for several high-profile positions for local companies last year. It was responsible for finding chief executives for International Rectifier Corp., Earthlink and 3-Day Blinds, among others. It also sought and found a chief financial officer for Northrop Grumman Corp. "There continues to be incredible opportunity in Southern California," said Caroline Nahas, managing director for Southern California. "We are still the center of innovation." One of the challenges to finding executives locally is the high cost of housing, despite a softening of the real estate market. Nahas has seen companies try to adapt their compensation packages for those who move from out of state as Southern California remains one of the costliest places to live in the country. Nahas said that companies have started to put plans in place to address the aging baby boomer population. "We cannot underestimate the pending outflow of executives in the baby boomer category that will create a void in leadership," said Nahas. However, the current slowdown in the economy has forced some companies to postpone discretionary hiring or investments in new areas. But companies will still move forward with confidence if the vacant position is critical, Nahas said. Founded in 1969, Los Angeles-based Korn/Ferry International employs 17 recruiters in its local office. It has 82 offices worldwide.
