Thompson cites the Andersonville Study of Retail Economics - conducted in 2004 by the research firm Civic Economics - which showed that $73 of every $100 spent in locally owned stores remained in the northside Chicago community of Andersonville, compared to just $43 at nationally owned stores.

"This year, we're just starting out with the idea (of Independents Day)," Thompson says. "We'll try to make it an annual event."

The event - which will bring discounts of some locally produced items, wine-tastings and other promotions at participating stores - kicked off with a gathering of speakers and musicians Thursday night at Cozmic Pizza in downtown Eugene.

"We're just trying to raise people's awareness about the importance of locally owned, independent businesses," says Gavin McComas, the Sundance owner.

"People develop relationships with their local stores and with the people who work there," he says. "It's the kind of the social experience one doesn't have in the big-box stores."

Other retailers participating in the Independents Day promotion include the 15-or-so members of Unique Eugene, an association of locally owned retailers, along with stores such as Red Barn The Red Barn was a fast-food restaurant chain founded in the early-1960s in Dayton, Ohio by Harry Barmier.
