Retail market has a banner year in 1993.

Building on the previous year's momentum, Manhattan's retail market fared particularly well in 1993. Much primary space was rented during the year, and, as rents dipped slightly, store leasing was vibrant in virtually every retail corridor in the city.

and broad-minded in their store leasing decisions, valuing the quality and stability of their tenancy more than simply the dollar value of the space. And such retailers were plentiful.

Attracted to the city for its unparalleled dynamism, glamour, and, of course, traffic, prestigious local, national and international retailers made it a point to be there. If they weren't here before, they came and opened shops; if they were already here and accounted for, they renewed or expanded their commitment.

on virtually every city block. Among retailing giants, Barney's opened its long-awaited flagship store on Madison and 60th Street. The acclaimed Warner Brother's Store opened in time for the holiday season at the corner of 57th and Fifth Avenue, and remains a remarkably popular shopping destination among visitors and "natives" alike.

In other big retail news: the beautiful Takashimaya store opened on Fifth Avenue between 54th and 55th streets; Bed, Bath & Beyond opened on Sixth Avenue and 18th Street; the Barnes & Noble Super Store made headlines in 1993, debuting its sprawling and action-packed book store at Broadway and 82nd Street, and Faconnable, the sophisticated division of Nordstroms's, opened its first new York store at the former Gucci space on Fifth Avenue at 53rd.

SoHo continued to thrive in 1993, with the Guggenheim Museum Guggenheim Museum, officially Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, major museum of modern art in New York City. Founded in 1939 as the Museum of Non-objective Art, the Guggenheim is known for its remarkable circular building (1959) designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.  and Gift Store, the Nature Company, Country Road and Aveda collectively heightening the area's allure. On Sixth Avenue, spring 1994 openings included Today's Man, Barnes & Noble, and T.J. Maxx. Joining neighbors Staples and Bed, Bath & Beyond, these additions will further distinguish the region as a discount corridor. Lower Broadway and Union Square itself, meanwhile, is now home to the new and trendy Equinox equinox (ē`kwĭnŏks), either of two points on the celestial sphere where the ecliptic and the celestial equator intersect. The vernal equinox, also known as "the first point of Aries," is the point at which the sun appears to cross the  Fitness Club and a recently expanded ABC ABC

Carpet. These will complement the neighboring Bombay Company, Jennifer Leather, Fishs Eddy, Paragon and Herman's to further distinguish this area as mecca for home furnishings and leisure time retailing.

In other promising news, the venerable Coffee Shop eatery will expand into Union Square Park this year; Toys 'R' Us has leased the 40,000 square-foot former Kiddie kid·die or kid·dy

The Upper West Side fared similarly well during 1993. A paucity of availabilities anywhere in this region underscored its enduring health. In addition to Barnes & Noble's Superstore, Talbots opened at 82nd and Broadway; 9 West, the shoe store chain, opened at Broadway and 83rd; and Gymboree, the children's apparel retailer, opened at Broadway and 80th. Fishs Eddy, in addition to expanding on Broadway and 19th Street, recently opened an Uptown location on Broadway and 77th Street.

On the Upper East Side, 87th Street and Third Avenue was seemingly the location of choice. With move-ins there by Tower Records, Pier One Imports, and GAP Kids, significant retailing on Third Avenue expanded northward to complement the bustling 86th Street shopping corridor. Elsewhere in the region, the massive Polo Sport opened across from the Ralph Lauren flagship store on 72nd and Madison Avenue, as did Banana Republic, which opened on the corner of Madison and 85th Street.

Based on the retail market's enduring vibrancy during 1993, prospects are indeed bright for the year ahead.
