Responsys Expanding Efforts to Take the Internet Back From Spammers; Four Areas Seen as Critical to Alleviate Unsolicited Email.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 2003

Responsys, Inc., a pioneer of engaging online marketing services that wins and retains customers, today announced its intention to expand its efforts to fight spam and support legitimate consent-based marketing. Responsys recently created an executive committee on key privacy issues to ensure that Responsys represents the interests of over 200 leading brands including: Lands End, Continental Airlines and Wells Fargo.

"Responsys is employing a privacy strategy that is aimed at controlling unsolicited email and differentiating spammers from legitimate marketers said David Silver, VP of Privacy Strategy at Responsys. "There are no quick fixes to spam," continued Silver. "We believe the economics of spamming must change along four fronts":

-- Technology -- Responsys is working directly with the major

ISPs and email providers to refine spam technology to increase

its effectiveness enabling ISPs and consumers to clearly

identify spam from legitimate email.

-- Education -- Responsys is working directly with its clients to

educate consumers on privacy and spam. This effort empowers

consumers to understand how to identify spam, assert their

rights and use technology deployed by ISPs and email vendors.

-- Industry initiatives -- Responsys is working with

associations, such as the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI See Network Associates. )

Email Service Provider Coalition, that represent legitimate

marketers and their customers. These initiatives support the

rights of consumers and legitimate marketers by creating

common definitions for spam and promoting best practices for

consent-based communications with consumers.

-- Legislation -- Responsys participates and provides input into

current legislative and enforcement initiatives resulting in

regulations that are enforceable with less ambiguity.

"Its all about consent not content -- filtering messages based on content is an imperfect interim solution because we don't have a good way for ISPs to track consent-based communications," continued Silver.

"Spam is a critical issue, not only for our clients but for the Internet as we know it," said Howard Koenig, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Responsys. "Responsys will continue to take on a proactive, leadership role by attacking spam on these four fronts. In this way we have the best chance to change the economics of spam and put control back in the hands of the consumer where it belongs," continued Koenig.

More information about spam-related issues can be found at the Responsys website (www.responsys.com) in a recently published white paper containing "must know" facts and strategies for online marketers.
