Resources offer CPAs road map to eldercare solutions.

Practitioners who work with older clients know that they come with a unique set of characteristics. For example, when a client problem surfaces, it is generally urgent--sometimes a life or death matter--and must be solved immediately. However, often the primary contact in these situations is not the client, but rather a friend or family member--who may live in a different city or state than the CPA (Computer Press Association, Landing, NJ) An earlier membership organization founded in 1983 that promoted excellence in computer journalism. Its annual awards honored outstanding examples in print, broadcast and electronic media. The CPA disbanded in 2000.  and client.

The Internet-based ElderCare Resource Guide includes a listing of care management and hospital services; fiduciary and PFP PFP - Plastic Flat Package  services; elder law As of the early 2000s a relatively new specialty devoted to the legal issues of Senior Citizens, including estate planning, health care,  resources; forensic elder abuse Elder Abuse Definition

Member volunteers from throughout California compiled the materials found on the site.

The easy-to-use ElderCare Resource Guide--which is available to the public--allows users to select resources based on geographic region and then area of need. From there, services are listed by service provider and include detailed contact information, including links to more information.

ELDERCARE INFORMATION SOURCES

The ElderCare Resource Guide is just the latest eldercare information source available to CPAs.

The California CPA Education Foundation offers annual conferences lead by experts in a variety of eldercare disciplines; chapter PFP interest group meetings regularly feature guest speakers who provide eldercare information at the grassroots level; and the AICPA AICPA

offers modular training programs, either seminar or self-study, and publications under the name PrimePlus/ElderCare Services.

In addition, the AICPA PFP Division offers its members a quarterly eldercare newsletter and a PrimePlus/ElderCare Services "self-assessment tool" that allows CPAs to track competency and progress toward education goals.

CPAs interested in providing services to older clients must first develop a broad skill set that will allow them to coordinate the efforts of a professional service team to best serve their clients' needs.

Issues that CPAs or attorneys may need to familiarize themselves with when working with an aging clientele include financial issues, such as Medi-Cal planning, estate planning Estate Planning

As they dive into eldercare, CPAs also may want to venture into specialized disciplines, such as financial planning, financial advisory services advisory services

ELDERCARE TASK FORCE

Along with the ElderCare Resource Guide and other available information, CalCPA's ElderCare Task Force offers another way for CPAs to familiarize themselves with the variety of eldercare services.

Task force members established relationships with other professionals as they built the resource guide, and many have been able to create local practitioner teams to serve their clients and have been introduced to clients who need their special services.

The task force continues to need member support to enhance and update the resource guide to make it even more valuable to members. Many task force members serve on the state PFP Committee as an eldercare networking forum and to enhance their skills. Members can apply to join the state PFP committee at www.calcpa.org/members/committees.

The ElderCare Resource Guide is a valuable tool to help CPAs meet the unique challenges their clients encounter. It also is a significant public resource contributed by CalCPA that shows its commitment to eldercare services. As California's community of older retired residents look for assistance with their unique problems, CalCPA members will be there to help.
