Its subject is Cecilia Gallerani, the mistress of Lodovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. The painting is one of only four female portraits Leonardo painted (the other three being the Mona Lisa . Since da Vinci's restless mind is endlessly curious, meeting someone from the far future doesn't frighten him--instead he is fascinated by anything Mario can tell him. Resnick weaves in all kinds of encounters: with Machiavelli, for instance. At one point, Mario asks Leonardo if he is interested in codes, or secret societies, or the Holy Grail--but that's just a humorous aside.
