Together, with fellow dancer and collaborator Janet Vernon, he has guided Sydney Dance Company to become one of Australia's most successful and well-known dance companies.  and associate artistic director Janet Vernon will step down in April after their current U.S. tour. Other ballet and contemporary dance companies include the Australian Dance Theatre, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Leigh Warren & Dancers, Chunky Move, Mirramu Dance Company and the Sydney , the couple elevated the company into a leader of the contemporary dance scene. Murphy took the reins of the company as a 26-year-old in 1976 and led it on more than 20 international tours. He created 52 works for the company, including 33 full-length productions, many with original Australian music and design.

In a joint statement, Murphy and Vernon said that Australia's dance world has entered a less dynamic phase and the "potential for new adventures is greatly diminished in these cash-strapped times." They are disappointed with the government's indifference "to a force that could bring so much to the troubled culture of Australia's identity."
