Resignation opens seat on transit district's board.

Residents of north Eugene and Coburg have a chance to seek appointment to the Lane Transit District A transit district or transit authority is a special-purpose district organized as either a corporation chartered by statute, or a government agency, created for the purpose of providing public transportation within a specific region.  Board following the unexpected resignation of board Vice President Susan Ban.

Ban will be feted at the board's meeting on Wednesday, her last. The board also hopes to select a new vice president to succeed Ban.

Members generally serve four-year terms and represent distinct geographic areas in LTD's service boundary.

Ban has represented Zone 4, covering north Eugene east of River Road and areas in and around the city of Coburg, since mid-2002. Her term expires in July 2008.

Applicants have until November to apply for the seat; Senate confirmation hearings are slated for December and the governor hopes to make an appointment in January, LTD spokesman Andy Vobora said.

"I feel like we went through some challenging times, but it's been a very good experience," she said of her LTD board service. "I learned a lot about transit and have great admiration for transit."
