Resident urges city to fight crime with gun ordinance.

Byline: CITY BEAT/SPRINGFIELD By Bob Keefer The Register-Guard

Springfield voters agreed this month to build a new jail to help cut crime in the city. But even if the city finds money to operate the jail - and it hasn't, so far - a new jail is a couple of years off, at best.

So Springfield resident Curtiss Greer has his own idea to solve property crime in the city: a gun and ammunition in every home, by city ordinance A law, statute, or regulation enacted by a Municipal Corporation.

An ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. A municipality, such as a city, town, village, or borough, is a political subdivision of a state within which a municipal corporation has been
.

"They did that in Kennesaw, Ga.," Greer says. "And the crime rate went down."

Greer is the gun advocate who forced both the Springfield School District and the Willamalane Park & Recreation District to relax their weapons bans last year.

"I am a very avid firearms This is an extensive list of small arms — pistol, machine gun, grenade launcher, anti-tank rifle — that includes variants.

person," he says. "It's the private armed citizen that criminals are scared of."

Greer has twice sent the City Council letters proposing a Kennesaw-style ordinance, but has gotten no response, he says. Now he's sent a third letter asking for a written response. "Why are they reluctant to enact a measure that will reduce crime without costing money?" he says.

The small Georgia city enacted the ordinance in 1982. Its police department claims property crime has dropped substantially since then, even while the population has increased.

Meter readers of the future

The Springfield Utility Board is testing the Segway gyro-stabilized scooter scooter: see motorcycle.  for its meter readers.

`Currently, our meter readers walk or drive from place to place,' said Mary Ann Rhodes, SUB's director of customer service. `We think the Segway has the potential to not only increase our productivity, but also to improve our service to customers.'

The Segway will be used on select routes by meter readers through Monday while the utility evaluates its use.
