L.A. financier David Polak's philanthropy paid off last week in a big way: The Israeli scientist he's backed for the past decade went to Stockholm to pick up the Nobel Prize in Chemistry The Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Swedish: Nobelpriset i kemi) is awarded once a year by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. It is one of the six Nobel Prizes. The first prize was awarded in 1901. .

"It's not too often you're connected with a Nobel prize Nobel Prize, award given for outstanding achievement in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, or literature. The awards were established by the will of Alfred Nobel, who left a fund to provide annual prizes in the five areas listed above. ," said Polak, founder and chairman emeritus of NWQ Investment Management Co. "It's a privilege to be associated with such an enormous event."

Polak and his wife Janet donated $500,000 to fund a chair at Israel's Technion Faculty of Medicine in the early 1990s. The position was awarded to Aaron Ciechanover Aaron Ciechanover (אהרון צ'חנובר) (born October 1, 1947) is an Israeli biologist, and Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate for his discovery with Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose, of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. , who was researching proteins. Later, based on Ciechanover's involvement, the Polaks pledged $2.6 million to establish the David and Janet Polak Center for Cancer Research and Vascular Biology at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

Ciechanover, his colleague Avram Hershko Avram Hershko (Hebrew: אברהם הרשקו‎, born Herskó Ferenc, 31 December 1937) is an Israeli biochemist.  and Dr. Irwin A. Rose of UC Irvine will share the Nobel for their work, which has already led to development of the cancer treatment Velcade and has the potential for treatment of leukemia, cystic fibrosis cystic fibrosis (sĭs`tĭk fībrō`sĭs), inherited disorder of the exocrine glands (see gland), affecting children and young people; median survival is 25 years in females and 30 years in males.  and neurological diseases such as Parksinson's.
