Most of us went into journalism because the field promised excitement and a chance to change the world. But, really, who thought it would be this kind of exciting? Cutbacks, layoffs, more with less, etc.

Change is coming so fast, it's hard to figure out what to do, so we can get back to changing the world and having one hell of a good time.

Take heart. NCEW NCEW National Conference of Editorial Writers  is on the case.

In this issue, you will find summaries of the NCEW Opinion Pool's first research effort to guide you in planning your next steps in opinion journalism. NCEW Foundation has funded almost $40,000 of research in three focus groups. As an observer of the ones in Seattle, I really encourage you to take full advantage of this research. A more formal report is on the way, and the Reynolds Journalism Institute will be hosting the research and posting video clips A short video presentation.  from the Seattle groups. A readership survey will follow with more information.

You will also find reports from the Knight Digital Media Center's seminar on best practices for online commentary.

I was really taken with one speaker at the March seminar in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , a young Toronto-based blogger. Consider Rahaf Harfoush your guide across the media generation gap. She provides a snapshot of how young people want to access their news and commentary--we just have to figure out how to get on their radar screens.

Along those lines, Carole Christie has volunteered to be your marketing consultant pro bono Short for pro bono publico [Latin, For the public good]. The designation given to the free legal work done by an attorney for indigent clients and religious, charitable, and other nonprofit entities. . She is the communications director at Reynolds, and also has an impressive marketing background.

, sometimes never checking to see if the messages hit the mark. Those days of passive pontificating are through. The future is becoming more about reaching out to and building audiences.
