The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive review of the essential steps in research, with a focus on concepts that underlie methodological approaches to research, designs used to answer specific research questions, and methods for collecting, presenting, and analyzing data. The book is intended for readers in the health care professions who are undergraduates in the latter phase of study, graduate students, or those practitioners involved in research.

Although there are many comprehensive books on research, this book uses an innovative approach. Most, but not all, of the content of the book is based on 3 hypothetical Hypothetical is an adjective, meaning of or pertaining to a hypothesis. See:

concepts, methodology, design, and methods. The authors have tried to provide a balance of material covered between qualitative and quantitative data. Ethical considerations are reviewed when indicated.

The book provides a basic foundation in research study for the student pursuing a career in health care. It would also be suitable for graduate students as a reference source. The practitioner may not find it useful because it may not be appropriate as a quick reference. The book builds on information from prior chapters, and, therefore, it may be more time consuming to retrieve the information needed. The authors provide a comprehensive treatment of the subject matter, and the depth of coverage is sufficient for its audience. The information is current, and extensive references are provided where appropriate throughout the book to support the reliability and validity of concepts and materials presented.

The book is well written, and the chapters are logically organized, starting with basic concepts in research, formulating ideas for conducting research, designing and implementing research, and culminating in presenting and analyzing data. The final section of the book deals with more specialized spe·cial·ize

In summary, this book provides a basic foundation for professional students in physical therapy. It provides current, pertinent information in a logical, comprehensive manner.
