Research and assessment of total carbon content and carbon dioxide emissions from soils of different land-use purpose.

On 10 June 2011, Mantas Pranskevi?ius defended his dissertation at the public meeting of the Council of Scientific Field of Environmental Engineering in the Senate Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. The dissertation was prepared at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in 2007-2011. The single carbon in the soil and carbon dioxide emission level from the soil relationship is analyzed in this work. The main research object is Neris Regional Park: Paluknys, Uzpaliai and Pailiepis. The aim of the work--to create the total carbon determination methodology which would help to assess amount of carbon in soils and carbon dioxide emissions from the soil. In this work few major problems are analyzed: amount of single-carbon determination in different land-use soils and carbon dioxide emissions from this soil determination. Relationship between carbon amount in soil and carbon dioxide emission level and impact to climate change was determined based on results of modelling.

The material accumulated in this work can be applied for further research on the total carbon in soil by expanding the scope of research. The data can be applied for a theoretical analysis based on the investigation of carbon dioxide emissions and modelling. It can also be used for the assessment of carbon in soils of different land-use purpose and respective carbon dioxide emissions. The modelling work performed with the DNDC model can be applied for assessment of Lithuanian territorial soils according to the total carbon and carbon dioxide. This program shows small changes in the boundaries between research and simulated data.

The investigations of pH and heavy metals together with the total carbon can be assessed at the level of scientific investigations and, using additional data, used to evaluate the influence of soil pollution on the content of the total carbon.

5 articles are published on the dissertation topic: two--in ISI Web of Science refereed journal, one--in Thomson ISI list, one--in reviewed Lithuanian conferences materials, one--in non-reviewed Lithuanian conferences material. 4 conference reports were produced in Lithuania on the topic of dissertation.

Mantas Pranskevi?ius obtained his first degree in Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Environmental Engineering, Siauliai University Faculty of Technology, 2004. Master of Science in Environment Engineering, Faculty of Environmental Engineering, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, 2007. He works at VGTU Research Institute of Environmental Protection since 2007. In 2007-2011, he became a PhD student at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Faculty of Environmental Engineering. At present, he is Associate Professor at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Faculty of Environmental Engineering.
