In all, the CAD market is estimated to have an installed base of 20 million users. Many of those users are using AutoCAD A full-featured CAD program from Autodesk that runs on PCs, Macs and Unix workstations. AutoCAD is a de facto standard with numerous add-ons available for enhanced functionality. Originally developed for CP/M machines in the early 1980s, AutoCAD was one of the first CAD programs for  and most are still working in 2D. Autodesk (Autodesk, Inc., San Rafael, CA, www.autodesk.com) A leading provider of computer-aided design (CAD) software, founded in 1982. It introduced AutoCAD in its first year, and three years later, became the first PC CAD company to go public.  says there are about 3.5 million registered users, but the company estimates that there are many more illegal users. There are considerably more people using desktop CAD products like AutoCAD than there are people using EDS (Electronic Data Systems, Plano, TX, www.eds.com) Founded in 1962 by H. However, when looked at by revenue, these companies, with their higher priced products have more market share.

The CAD market is undergoing the same trend as seen in the Digital Content Creation The development of newsworthy, educational and entertainment material for distribution over the Internet or other electronic media. See DAMS.  market and that is an erosion of prices that's leading to increased users. It is believed that improving economic conditions and technical evolution will encourage growth in the CAD market albeit modestly in the short term.
