Research and Markets: Tesco Became the Leading Retailer in the Neighbourhood in 2006, Leaving the Co-Op Group in Second Place, Followed By Musgrave and Spar in Joint Third - UK Neighbourhood Retailing 2007.

DUBLIN, Ireland -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c49469) has announced the addition of UK Neighbourhood Retailing 2007 to their offering.

Highlights

Tesco became the leading retailer in the neighbourhood in 2006, leaving the Co-op Group in second place, followed by Musgrave and Spar in joint third. The retailer opened around 100 new Express stores in 2006, while healthy like-for-like growth also played a major part in it taking over the market leadership. While the rate of growth shown by the major multiple grocers has been impressive, many symbol groups have struggled in the neighbourhood. Of the largest four symbol groups only Musgrave and Costcutter added market share in 2006. Looking ahead, the author expects neighbourhood sales to increase at a slower pace, by 11.5% between 2006 and 2011. While sales densities will continue to benefit from innovation in product and investment in store formats, growth will be hindered because there are now fewer opportunities for these retailers to expand quickly through acquisition.
