It has no connection with the US-based Merck & Co. With sales of just under 1.8 billion euros in 2005, generics now form the largest segment of Merck KGaA's pharmaceutical business, accounting for 46% of revenues.

Merck's generic businesses are not grouped under a single name. The leading subsidiaries are Alphapharm, the leading generic manufacturer in Australia, and Merck Generiques, based in France. Other important subsidiaries include Genpharm, in Canada, and Generics (UK). Genpharm opened a US office in 2005.

Strong rumours have emerged in the German press regarding a possible sale of Merck's generic businesses. The company has confirmed this is a possibility, but no decision has yet been made. The Merck Serono In September 2006, Merck KGaA announced its intent to purchase the majority of Serono shares from Ernesto Bertarelli and the Bertarelli family. The Merck-Serono merger was announced on September 21, 2006. Merck KGaA and Serono operated as distinct entities until at least January 2007.  board expects to decide the unit's future in the first half of 2007.

In 2004, Merck moved its leading US Company, Dey, into its generic division, as 'the basis for strategic reorientation'. Dey is not a generic manufacturer as such, but develops novel delivery systems for off-patent products.
