), a developer of next-generation medical technology, announced today the results of recent animal studies that demonstrated the potential of the MYO-VAD(TM) cardiac recovery system to help prevent the progression of heart failure when used to support a diseased or failing heart.

The finding was featured in a paper presented at a recent ASAIO ASAIO American Society for Artificial Internal Organs  (American Society for Artificial Internal Organs American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) is an organization of individuals and groups that are interested in artificial internal organs and their development. ) conference by Mark A. Anstadt, M.D., FACS FACS Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

following a heart attack is important to prevent the further progression of the disease," said Jeffrey Helfer, President of Biophan's Cardiovascular division. "A previous version of the MYO-VAD technology has already saved lives in emergency-use situations. The ability of this technology to provide acute support has been shown, and this data is further evidence of the potential of the MYO-VAD technology to successfully compete in the rapidly emerging market for therapeutic treatment of heart disease."

The MYO-VAD is the first in a family of products based on Direct Mechanical Ventricular Actuation (DMVA DMVA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs ) technology. It consists of a flexible polymer cup that fits around the heart, coupled to a drive unit, which pumps the heart to restore blood flow. Because it does not come into direct contact with circulating blood, the MYO-VAD promises to provide substantial advantages over today's cardiac assist devices by eliminating serious and potentially fatal problems, including clotting and stroke, bleeding, and infection.

Due to its technically simple insertion and removal requirements, anticipated lower rates of complication, and lower device cost, the MYO-VAD is expected to provide a significant reduction in the cost of treating heart failure patients. This promises to extend the physician's ability to treat heart failure and help save thousands of lives. The simple nature of the MYO-VAD also promises to extend the use of the device to most hospitals, not just the small number of specialized transplant or cardiac care facilities required by most existing cardiac assist devices.

2. MRI - Measurement Requirements and Interface.
). Having solved these problems, the Company has begun to license its technologies for MRI safety and image compatibility to leading device manufacturers. Biophan's technologies enable medical systems such as pacemakers, interventional surgical devices such as catheters and guidewires, and implants such as stents to be safely and/or effectively imaged under MRI. The Company is helping to commercialize the MYOTECH MYO-VAD(TM), a new, MRI-compatible cardiac recovery system which has significant potential to improve the treatment of many forms of acute and chronic heart disease. Other applications in development include drug delivery and power systems which derive energy from body heat. Committed to growth through innovation and developmental leadership, Biophan and its licensors now hold a total of over 200 U.S. and foreign patents, licenses, or applications. This total includes 56 issued U.S. patents, and over 100 pending applications at various stages of examination at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The patents cover areas including nanotechnology (nanomagnetic particle coatings), medical device designs, radio frequency filters, polymer composites, thermoelectric ther·mo·e·lec·tric   also ther·mo·e·lec·tri·cal
